An injury like this must be dealt with carefully because most of the time, bleeding like this can indicate trauma to the head.

Bleeding from the Ear:

This may be due to a burst (perforated) eardrum, an ear infection, a blow to the side of the head, or an explosion.

Symptoms include sharp pain, earache, deafness, and possible dizziness. The presence of blood or blood-stained watery fluid may indicate a more severe underlying head injury.

What to do?

  1. Help the victim into a half-sitting position, tilting his head to the injured side to allow blood to drain from the ear.
  2. Hold a sterile dressing or a clean, non-fluffy pad lightly in place on the ear. Do not plug the ear. Send or take the casualty to the hospital.

CAUTION!
If you suspect a head injury, support the victim’s head in the position you found him and call for emergency help.

Your Aim:
■ To arrange transport to a hospital.
